Energy Costs Rising – Act Now

Thinking About a Heat Pump? Now’s the Time to Start Planning

Across the Isle of Wight, many households are still feeling the impact of rising and unpredictable energy costs — especially those not connected to mains gas.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And there’s good news: there are practical steps you can take now to make your home more energy-stable and future-ready.

At Green IOW, we’re encouraging residents to start thinking about switching to low-carbon heating — particularly air-source heat pumps — as an alternative to oil or LPG systems.

Why consider a heat pump?

Oil and LPG heating systems have long been common on the island, but they come with a challenge: prices can change quickly and unpredictably.

Heat pumps, on the other hand, run on electricity — helping you:

  • Reduce reliance on delivered fuels
  • Protect yourself from volatile fuel prices
  • Lower your carbon footprint

It’s a more stable, forward-looking way to heat your home.

Don’t leave it too late

One of the most important things to know is that switching to a heat pump doesn’t happen overnight.

From first enquiry to installation, it typically takes:

  • 3–4 months if you’re self-funding
  • 4–7 months if you’re applying for a grant

That means if you wait until autumn, you could be facing long waiting lists — and potentially heading into winter without your new system in place.

Local insight

As our Director, Lisa Beaney, explains:

“Many Isle of Wight homes rely on oil or LPG, leaving residents particularly vulnerable to price spikes. Air-source heat pumps offer a more stable, efficient, and future-ready solution. But the key message is timing — starting the process now ensures homes are ready before the colder weather returns.”

What funding is available?

The good news is that financial support is available to help with the upfront costs.

You may be eligible for:

  • The Boiler Upgrade Scheme – currently offering £7,500 towards installation, with potential increases to £9,000 expected later this year for eligible oil-heated homes
  • The Warm Homes Local Grant – for lower-income households or those receiving certain benefits

We know funding applications can feel daunting — but that’s where we come in. Green IOW can guide you through the process and help you understand what support you might qualify for.

A great fit for island homes

With so many off-grid properties here on the Isle of Wight, heat pumps are a particularly good match for local homes.

Making the switch can help you:

  • Cut dependence on fuel deliveries
  • Manage energy costs over the long term
  • Play a part in building a low-carbon future for the island
